02/12/02 - Director’s Statement “The Actual Importance…(of Being Somewhat Earnest)” is intended to be a romantic comedy that highlights the inner doubts and stress that dating can cause. In directing the piece, I attempted to capture the essence of the moments right before a person takes the plunge to ask someone out. In order to make this piece more personal, I decided to make the film first person, thru the use of voice-overs. Because the idea of being able to listen in on someone else’s thought process has always been intriguing, it works in the film to bring the audience closer to the character. As the director, I wanted to show the awkwardness, discomfort, and fear, as well as the exhilaration, excitement and lust that is all involved in the dating process. I also wanted to play on those ideas and offer a look into an area where everyone feels nervous and unsure of themselves at one point or another – love. I hope this short film reaches these goals.
